What You Can Expect
An authentic day on the water
Weather, wildlife and local conditions may change the final plan.
Morning briefing
We meet at the harbour, review the plan for the day, and discuss conditions and recent wildlife reports. Your guide explains what to expect and how to prepare.
Departure
We head out into the fjords, navigating toward the areas where whales have been reported. The route changes daily based on conditions.
Searching and observing
Our captain and guide scan the water and communicate with other vessels. When we find whales, we approach respectfully and spend time observing their natural behaviour.
Hot lunch onboard
We serve a warm meal on the vessel, giving you time to rest, warm up and enjoy the Arctic landscape around you.
Photography and scenery
The fjords offer dramatic scenery — snow-covered mountains, dark waters and low winter light. Your guide can help with camera settings and positioning.
Returning to harbour
We head back to Tromsø in the afternoon or early evening, depending on conditions and daylight. The exact timing is flexible.
Wildlife & Nature
The natural environment
The fjords around Tromsø and Skjervøy are known as one of the best places in the world to see humpback whales and orcas from late autumn through winter. The whales follow enormous schools of herring into the fjords to feed, and their presence has made this region a destination for wildlife enthusiasts from around the world. We must be clear: there is no guarantee of whale sightings. The whales are wild animals, and their movements depend on the herring, the weather and conditions we cannot control. Some days are striking. Other days, the fjords are quiet. What we can guarantee is that our team will put you in the best possible position, using local knowledge and real-time information, and that every decision is made with respect for the animals and your safety.

Archipelago
Expedition Motor Catamaran
Archipelago is the flagship of Northern Yachting AS, an expedition motor catamaran built for extended private journeys through the fjords and islands of Northern Norway. The catamaran hull gives exceptional stability and generous deck space, making her an ideal platform for whale watching, northern lights cruises and photography.
Inside, a warm and fully insulated interior, a heated saloon with panoramic windows and comfortable overnight cabins let guests stay out for several days and wake up in a different fjord each morning. She is the mobile base for our most exclusive journeys, including whale adventures from Lodge Havnnes and sea to summit ski touring to remote peaks.
Onboard dining is prepared by the crew, including Pelle, our marine biologist and chef. Operated from Tromsø with captain, guide and chef on every journey.

Clothing
Dress warmly in layers. Windproof and waterproof outer layers, a warm hat, gloves and warm boots are essential. The Arctic winter is cold, and it feels colder on the water.
Weather
Conditions in Northern Norway change quickly. We may adjust departure times, routes or even the date based on weather and sea conditions. Your safety always comes first.
Seasickness
If you are prone to seasickness, we recommend taking medication before departure. The fjords are generally sheltered, but conditions can vary.
Photography
Bring a camera with a zoom lens if you want to photograph whales. Your guide can advise on settings and positioning. A phone camera works for landscape shots.
Children
We welcome children who are comfortable on a boat for a full day. Please discuss the ages of your children with us so we can advise on suitability.
Accessibility
Boarding the vessel requires stepping over a gunwale. If anyone in your group has mobility concerns, please let us know and we will discuss options.
