This private wildlife photography tour in Norway is designed for photographers who want control over pace and priorities. There is time to wait, change position, return to a location and remain with a subject when the conditions are right. No shared-tour timetable determines when the group has to move on.
Before arrival, we discuss the species the group hopes to photograph, the balance between stills and video, the preferred level of guidance, equipment and mobility. That brief shapes the photographer, the daily approach and the supporting logistics. Keen amateurs, experienced photographers, private photography groups and professional production teams can all be accommodated, with guidance adjusted accordingly.

Winter wildlife photography in Northern Norway
The principal winter period for photographing orcas and humpback whales in the Tromsø region is normally from November to January, although both timing and location can change as the herring moves. Current observations and local knowledge are therefore more useful than a fixed route.
Low sun, blue-hour light, snow-covered coastlines and long periods of darkness create very different working conditions over the course of the day. Sea eagles and other coastal wildlife may also be encountered.
When the sky is dark and clear and aurora activity is present, the programme can continue with Northern Lights photography. Evening sessions are planned around the forecast and the group's preferred approach, including landscape compositions, time-lapse and video when requested.

Summer wildlife and the long Arctic light
In spring and summer, the emphasis shifts to coastal birdlife, seals, sea eagles, puffins, changing fjord landscapes and, in suitable locations, foxes. Long days and the midnight-sun period allow sessions to be timed around quieter hours and softer light.
Depending on the group's brief and the conditions, the programme can combine photography from Archipelago with selected shore locations. This provides a wider range of backgrounds, working distances and perspectives without imposing a fixed daily route.

Your Guide
Professional guidance in the field and afterwards
The professional photographer works alongside the group throughout the field sessions. Guidance may cover reading the light, anticipating behaviour, choosing positions, exposure, autofocus, composition, low-light technique and working from a moving vessel.
Video guidance can also be included when it forms part of the group's brief.
After returning from the field, selected sessions can be used for image review, editing and visual storytelling. The purpose is not to impose one visual style, but to help each guest return with a stronger and more coherent body of work.

Audun grew up in Steigen, a small fishing community in Northern Norway, and has always been fascinated by the Arctic's rough landscape, culture and wildlife — both above and below the ocean's surface. His images are shaped by decades spent in the field, photographing locally and on expeditions along the Norwegian coast, where patience and an intimate understanding of wildlife behaviour turn fleeting moments into lasting photographs.
Throughout the expedition he provides practical guidance in the field — helping you anticipate behaviour, recognise strong compositions and adapt quickly when Arctic conditions change. Instruction is personal and adapted to each guest's experience level.

Our Vessels
Archipelago as a private photography platform
Archipelago is used as the group's private working platform between Tromsø, the surrounding fjords and selected coastal areas. Its stable deck and working space allow photographers to move between positions while the captain, guide and photographer respond to changing light and sea conditions.
The route is decided day by day. A fixed sightseeing timetable does not determine how long the group may remain in an area. Safety, sea conditions and responsible wildlife observation always take priority.

Her catamaran hull gives exceptional stability and generous deck space, making her ideal for whale watching and photography. A warm, fully insulated interior with panoramic windows and overnight cabins lets us stay out for several days and wake up in a different fjord each morning.

A Suggested Journey
A sample five-day photography expedition
The outline below shows how a five-day journey may be arranged. Departure times, locations and the order of sessions remain flexible throughout. The final programme is adapted to the group, the season and current conditions.
Day One — Arrival and photographic briefing
Private arrival arrangements can be coordinated by Tromsø Pure. Meet the expedition photographer, review the group's priorities and equipment, and discuss the latest forecast, local conditions and objectives for the first field day.
Day Two — First full day aboard Archipelago
The departure time and area are selected according to light, sea conditions and recent wildlife activity. The photographer helps the group establish an efficient working rhythm and gives each guest the level of support requested.
Day Three — Remote fjords and coastal wildlife
Travel to a different part of the coast to work with new backgrounds, weather and species. A productive encounter or unusual light is a reason to stay; the group is not required to leave simply because a scheduled stop has ended.
Day Four — Specialist photography day
Focus the day on the group's principal subject or technique. This may include whale photography, birds in flight, low-light work, landscape, stills, video or a combination agreed in advance. An image-selection and visual-storytelling session can follow the fieldwork.
Day Five — Final session and departure
When timing and conditions allow, return to the field for a final session. The photographer then helps the group review the work, identify a final selection and clarify any remaining post-production questions before departure.

Tromsø Pure can arrange the expedition as a stand-alone photography programme or as part of a wider private stay in Northern Norway. Suitable accommodation, private transfers, meals and additional activities can be coordinated around the group's brief.
Travel advisors and production teams have one point of contact from initial planning to departure. Requirements relating to equipment, transport, privacy, scheduling and supporting services can be addressed in the private proposal.
