Private Northern Lights Cruise — private Arctic experience from Tromsø, Northern Norway

Private Northern Lights Cruise

Chase the aurora from the water, away from city lights, on your own private vessel.

Introduction

A private journey, shaped around you

There is a particular quality to the silence of an Arctic fjord at night. The water is still, the mountains are dark against the sky, and the only light comes from the stars — or, if you are fortunate, from the aurora dancing overhead. A Northern Lights cruise gives you something a land-based tour cannot: space, silence and a horizon free of light pollution. We leave the harbour in Tromsø and head into the fjords, where city lights fade and the sky opens up. Your captain finds a sheltered spot, drops anchor or cruises slowly, and you wait. The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. They depend on solar activity and clear skies. We cannot guarantee that the aurora will appear. What we can do is put you in the best possible position to see it — on the water, away from light pollution, with a warm cabin to retreat to and hot drinks to keep you comfortable.

What You Can Expect

An authentic day on the water

Weather, wildlife and local conditions may change the final plan.

Evening departure

We meet at the harbour and depart as darkness falls. Your captain reviews conditions and the aurora forecast for the evening.

Cruising to clear skies

We head into the fjords, away from city lights. If cloud cover is variable, your captain may move to find clearer skies.

Watching and waiting

We anchor or cruise slowly in a sheltered location. Hot drinks are served, and you can watch the sky from the deck or through the cabin windows.

Photography

If the aurora appears, your captain can help with positioning for photographs. The reflections on the water can create stunning images.

Return to harbour

We return to Tromsø after the agreed duration, typically late evening.

It's rare for me to be this blown away by an experience. The speed and level of service of Northern-Yachting is unlike anything I've done before.

My experience went beyond what I could have dreamt up. The boat, the skiing, the service, the views, the food - all of it was a 10 out of a 10. I didn´t want to leave!

Clothing

Dress very warmly. Arctic nights are cold, and being on the water makes it feel colder. Multiple layers, warm hat, gloves and warm boots are essential.

Aurora visibility

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon. We cannot guarantee they will appear. Clear skies and solar activity are both needed, and we cannot control either.

Photography

Bring a camera with manual settings if possible. A tripod is helpful for long exposures. Your captain can advise on composition, but we are not photography instructors.

Weather

We monitor cloud conditions and may adjust departure times. If the sky is completely overcast with no chance of clearing, we will discuss options with you.

Children

Children are welcome. The cabin is warm and the experience can be magical for children. However, late nights and cold weather may not suit very young children.

Timing

Departure times vary with the season. In the polar night, we may depart earlier. As spring approaches, departures are later. We will confirm the exact time before your journey.

Not included

  • Transport to and from the harbour
